About this place
Just beyond the ticket gates at Wakamatsu-Kawada Station on the Toei Oedo Line, エスポワール is a small stand-style bakery with breads and baked treats laid out along the passageway. The shop operates as a direct-sales outlet in support of a welfare work centre, yet its display case is packed with thoughtfully made breads, from everyday snacks to more substantial options for a meal.
Among the sweet-bread staples are the “Premium Ogura Anpan,” made with azuki beans from Tokachi in Hokkaido, and an an-kroissant pairing chunky red-bean paste and poppy seeds in fragrant pastry. The selection also has a seasonal feel: a croissant filled with salted chestnuts and cream, pumpkin bread combining pumpkin cream and bean paste, and a croissant rolled with sweet potato make appealingly simple choices for a snack.
For lunch or a quick bite, there is a generous choice of savoury breads, too. Options include yakisoba bread, with noodles in a soft roll; beef-stew bread enriched with veal stock and wine; cheese naan topped with a four-cheese filling; and calzone filled with summer vegetables and bacon. The simple salt-butter roll is good on its own, or makes a handy base for adding a filling of your choice.
There is also a varied selection of handmade muffins and rusks, easy to choose for tea or as a small gift. As a takeaway-only shop right on the station route, it is a convenient place to stop between journeys and pick up a bread to suit the moment.
